Full Metal Alchemist

Full Metal Alchemist(Hagane no Renkinjutsushi) is an ongoing manga series written by Hiromu Arakawa which is published every month in the Monthly Shonen Gangan. Both the anime and manga have been major successes in Japan(though the anime later deviates from the main storyline).

Full Metal Alchemist is set in the fictional world of Amestris where the scientific use of alchemy is widespread. It goes a step further than the definition of alchemy we’re familiar with. In this world, alchemy is widely used for transmuting matter from one form to another through the use of transmutation circles and is not limited to the transmutation of any metal into gold. The underlying principal in alchemy here is the Principle of Equivalent Trade which is “in order to gain something, it is imperetive to produce something of equal value”

The story revolves around two boys, Edward and Alphonse Elric who embark on a journey to obtain the mystical Philosopher’s Stone which is said to make transmutations possible free from the restriction the underlying Principle of Equivalent Trade.

If you’re a fan of the FMA anime then it is recommended that you read Arakawa-sensei’s original work since the manga is much better than the anime(which soon deviates from the manga storyline).
